Chapter Members Jack Beiter '52 and Toni Hoffman '05 ride in MS 150 bike a thon

A message from Jack: I COULD USE YOUR HELP Ten years ago I first heard about the illness, Multiple Sclerosis. After checking into it I found it afflicted young people in the prime of their lives. (primarily between the ages of 20 and 45) Some could not stand; some could not walk; others could not feed themselves; some went blind; and the worst cases were they died prematurely. I felt if they were old like me, they had lived their lives and that was normal. But at those early ages, I felt it wasn’t fair. So, I formed a bicycle team to ride in the MS 150 Yearly Event. 160 miles from Cherry Hill, N.J., to Ocean City and back.

The first year there were 4 of us. (My twin sons were part of the 4 and are still riding with me) We raised $7,000. Each year thereafter we added riders to our team and collected more money. Last year we had 42 riders and raised $77,000. In the 9 years we have raised over $450,000. This our 10th consecutive year we expect to have 60 riders and raise at least $85,000 on the weekend of October 2nd and 3rd.

At 80, I am not sure how many more of these rides I can do, but would really like to reach a million dollars before I pack it in. Last fall, a rookie rider hit my front wheel and I went down. Broken collarbone; 3 upper ribs; punctured lung; and 2 herniated discs in my neck. This may be my last year as I can’t rid myself of neck pain night and day.

Contributions are tax deductible to the donor, but, give “HOPE” to all those afflicted. And, with your help, we “WILL” find that cure for this debilitating illness.

I would sincerely appreciate it if you would support me and my team with a contribution payable to ‘Multiple Sclerosis’ but send to me to hand deliver to M/S HQ in order that my team will be credited with the funds.
Please mail to: Jack Beiter, 201 Hermitage Drive, Radnor, Pa. 19087. Tel. 610-688-6285 and I will answer any questions you may have. Online contributions are also possible at http://bikepae.nationalmssociety.org/site/PageServer?pagename=BIKE_PAE_e... Please select New Jersey and then either my name or Toni's under participants so that one of us may get credit for any contributions from Penn State Alumni.

There is another way you can contribute and that is to buy a Road Sign. These are signs 2 x 3 that are made up to put whatever message on it that you would like and are placed along the 160 mile route where not only the 7,000 cyclists will see them, but also all those who drive along the route for the 2 day period. Great inexpensive advertising and for a good cause. Cost: $300 for the 2 day period. Just tell me what you would like on the sign and mail to me along with your check payable to Multiple Sclerosis.

Please know I am so appreciative of any support you can give me.

Best Personal Regards,

Jack Beiter, PSU ‘52
